This is a great book for Bible study or Christian book club. Fields of Blessing will mainly appeal to women, but the themes throughout the book are genderless and are reflected in the study questions that are included at the back of the book. The themes are trust, provision, journey, letting go, humility and obedience. There are also questions under the title "Deeper Study" that are more difficult to answer, and would be interesting for a mature Christian.I won't recite the story of Ruth because most know it. The author goes behind the scenes of the Bible and tells her story before she met Mahlon, during the ten years they lived together in Moab, her journey to Bethlehem with Naomi, and her marriage to Boaz. Parts of this book are obviously fiction, but I was captivated by it and enjoyed the history and learning about Ruth's way of life, and why she refused to leave Naomi.
The author quotes almost the whole Book of Ruth in Fields of Blessing and does it seamlessly. She also weaves in the Old Testament stories of Abraham, Lot, Tamar and Rahab that are part of Ruth's education of the One True God.
There is a glossary in the back of the book that will be helpful to young readers and those who are unfamiliar with the Bible. The hand-drawn maps are a delight, and I found myself referring to them often.
In our culture of abundance and prosperity this book reminds me that it is God Who supplies all my needs. His requirement of me is to trust Him and to obey Him. Ruth's example of trust and obedience through adversity and loss, and God's mercy and provision throughout her journey, reminds me that God is my Provision.

I dislike giving negative reviews to any writer, but I honestly really struggled to get through this novel. Spoilers ahead if you are unfamiliar with the Biblical account...
Literally 80% of the book details Ruth living in Moab, meeting Mahlon, marrying him, and then her journey back to Bethlehem with Naomi. When we finally get to Bethlehem and meet Boaz, most of their interactions are just the Biblical account transposed directly into the book in italicized block quotes. The language of the Bible translation is not anything like Blassingame's style of writing or speaking, so it makes for a choppy, disjointed read. So much of the book is focused on her falling in love and marrying Mahlon, contrasting with her relationship with Boaz, which feels rushed and unrealistic in light of her grieving a beloved husband. It almost gives the impression that the author was bored with the end of the story and just wanted to get it over, so she just copied and pasted in the Biblical narrative and filled in some details on her own words.
There were some decently accurate cultural details and I appreciated that she incorporated Old Testament narrative to build the story. Most of Ruth's development and emotions were believable and fit with the portrayal of the character.
However, I was very concerned with how unclear the author was with her explanation of Chemosh, the false god that the Moabites worshipped. She writes several scenes which portray Chemosh as a being who has the power to control and kill people, but never truly clarifies whether he is supposed to be a demon or Satan himself. To a reader with no theological background, this could be easily misconstrued as the author legitimizing Chemosh as an actual god (just not as strong as the One True God). Honestly, I would not recommend this book for that reason alone, let alone my dislike for the writing in general.
This book was inspiring. It was very well written and really gave insight on how Ruth's life may have played out for our Lord. It made her a real person; I feel like I know her and respect her. She could be a good friend of mine.
I am a 14 year old girl and I finished this book in two day... I was surprised at how easy reading it was and how much I learned about Ruth and the culture she lived in before she met Boaz. I really enjoyed this book, Amy is vivid writer and she put a whole different spin on the account of the book of Ruth. I KNOW I COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN!!!
It was very respectful and used a lot of scripture. I loved that they honored their parents so much. It was very exciting and kept me at the edge of my seat! I really enjoyed it.
This book is a blessing. I read it right before doing a group bible study on the Book of Ruth.
The story fleshes out what Ruth, Naomi, Boaz, etc. might have been like and how they came to be involved in each other's lives.
It does so staying totally true to Scripture, and has the actual wording of the Scripture of the Book of Ruth woven into the story.
The characters and the story is respectful, in that it does not have added racy-ness to try to make the story more "popular".
I loved it. It blessed me greatly before my Bible Study started and even more as we are in the middle of the Bible Study!!!
The author painted a vivid picture that seemed so real! Her story reflects the lineage of Christ, so much to gain by reading this book!
All though the book is fiction, she ties her story around the actual book of Ruth which is quoted verbatim all throughout her story. She certainly did her homework when it came to writing her book. She also quotes other scriptures.
My eyes were opened to many accounts from her story, I actually learned a lot about myself and who God really is. This book would be great to use for a bible study. The author even went as far as giving us a study guide and glossary in the back of the book.
I highly recommend this book for all concerns.
This book is such an easy read. The flow of events were seamless. I liked the way the author ended each page with such suspense, making the reader wonder what would happen next until you didn't want to put it down. I also like the way the author was able to weave actual bible dialogue into the story. The touching love story and marriage between Ruth and Mahlon will captivate the interest of all ages, young and old. I highly recommend this book for a study group. The questions at the end of the book will lead to serious discussions. Wilma B
